We’re deep into “the new normal” with many of us working from home and no end in sight. While there can be quite a few perks to being able to work from home, there are downsides as well. It’s possible that you’re working off a kitchen table, instead of a desk, or a coffee table, maybe even your couch. When we’re indoors all day it’s tempting to develop poor habits and get complacent which can lead to damaging effects on our body and mind.

WHY WORKING FROM HOME CAN BE A PAIN IN THE NECK
Literally. When we are working with suboptimal setups and staying home, our health is at risk. We are moving around less than normal and sitting in ways that can have harmful effects on our posture and our eyes. We’re staying still and staring at screens for longer periods of time. Here are a few ways you can improve your work-from-home life, and how TrekProof can soothe muscle and joint pain brought on by your current setup.

MOVE
Make a goal to get up and walk around for at least 5 minutes every hour. Allowing yourself to stretch your legs and get your blood flowing is going to help you alleviate any stiffness.

BREAK
Stop staring at screens when you take a break. Do not watch tv, scroll through your phone or check emails while eating lunch. Take a real break. Go for a short walk outside if you can. If you have a backyard or patio, eat lunch or read a book outdoors.

Even if you stay inside, try to meditate or close your eyes for a few minutes. It will help refresh your brain and minimize neck strain.

INVEST
If you have been working from home for a while and it looks like it will continue that way for some time , it’s time to upgrade your set-up. Invest in a nice desk and ergonomic chair. Convertible standing desks are a great option to avoid sitting for prolonged lengths of time. Ensure your computer screen positioned at the correct height. If you’ve been crouching over a laptop all these months, purchase a laptop stand, external keyboard and mouse. Ask if your company to reimburse you for a portion or all of the cost. If not, it’s still worth your while to look after yourself while you are working from home. Comfort matters.

EASING ACHES AND PAINS
Poor work-from-home conditions can result in stiff neck, sore lower back, tendinitis and carpal tunnel to name a few. Reversing these conditions takes time and proper care. TrekProof’s hot and cold packs that can be worn while stationary or on the move provide relief and contribute to healing.

For inflammation and swelling, apply the cold pack for 15 to 20 minutes at a time and repeat each hour. The cold temperature causes blood vessels to constrict which limits blood flow to reduce inflammation. Cold therapy also temporarily numbs nerves to naturally relieve pain.

Apply Trekproof’s heat pack to stiff and sore muscles for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. A heat pack increases blood flow to the area which provides more oxygen and nutrients.

Continue to use cold/heat packs regularly to prevent reoccurrence and additional injury.
